I want to talk real quickly to store owners.
Restaurant, book store, coffee shop? Really, any business that has a front door where a customer can walk in to buy your services.
Look! You need to claim your business listing, and here’s why.
Let me tell you a quick story.
I love taking my wife out to dinner. I’m a foodie kind of guy. But I’m not that person who takes a picture of every meal and sends it off to Instagram, that’s just not me.
But if the food’s phenomenal, the service, the atmosphere, I’ll write a review to say thanks – AND, if it’s awful I’m three times as likely to write a review.
It’s like my public service or civic duty to protect the world from horrible food.
So, we just went to this new restaurant in town to check it out and yikes! Yeah… not good.
I took that picture and left a review.
The review read:
“Did you know that Saltimbocca translates to “Jumps in the mouth”. This dish looks like it jumped out of someone’s mouth.
Or maybe this was supposed to be Au Jus but it came out “Ah-Choo!”
So now imagine that you’re the business owner and one of your wait staff, a millennial of course, shows you what your business listing looks like online at Google Maps.
You look and this is what you see:
- Bad ratings
- Bad reviews
- Bad images
So what can you do about it?
First of all, claim your listing using Google My Business.
If you don’t claim and control your listing, you can’t update the listing with current information, you can’t post images, and worst of all, you can’t respond to reviews.
Respond to all reviews
Once you’ve claimed the listing, start to respond to people who leave reviews. They invited you to a conversation, don’t ignore them.If someone reviews your business, they've invited you to a discussion, don't ignore them - respond to the review!Click To Tweet
It’s insensitive and arrogant when business owners dismiss reviews.
Someone took their time to talk about your business! You can’t ignore them. It only takes a minute to say thanks or to ask questions about the review. Just open the Google review section and you can easily respond.
Every week I make sure to check my reviews and respond to all comments that have been left, good or bad.
You’d be surprised how often simply replying to the review will inspire the reviewer to edit and update their review. Change a 2 star to a 5 star for example. I see it happen all the time.
Add beautiful pictures and images
Now about those bad images, all you need to do is to add good images of your own.
Take some amazing pics of the restaurant ambiance, the food, and of course your staff happily serving customers. And in Google My Business dashboard start uploading and tagging. Google will give preference to your images when you choose the map banner for your business.
So now you understand you need to claim the listing.
Important things to consider when claiming your listing
It’s easy to claim, but make sure you are careful in how you connect it to your Google my business.
- Don’t create your account using an employee’s personal Google login, use a business email to create a business account
- Add managers to the account
- Connect it to YouTube properly
- Make sure your information is accurate
- and more…
If you have questions or need help claiming and setting up your Google my Business account just ask.
I’m right here.
